Golf and Country Club Leisure Facilities

Guests staying at either Fairways or Stable Cottage are welcome to use the luxury facilities at the Highbullen Hotel Golf and Country Club Estate, within which they are located. The Estate, which covers 125 acres, is in the heart of the North Devon countryside and has some of the best leisure facilities in the area, many of which our guests can use free of charge.

Highbullen has a fantastic 18 hole golf course with stunning views over the rural Devon countryside, a course that offers challenges throughout surrounded by established ponds and borders and is popular with visitors and local golfers. There is also an indoor heated pool which is free to use and an outdoor pool available for the summer months. The spacious Gym with all of the latest equipment has TV's to keep you entertained while you keep fit and there are a range of other facilities including tennis courts, fishing, a beauty spa, snooker room, steam room and jacuzzi. Golfers can enjoy a reasonably challenging 18 holes around the stunning Highbullen Estate for only £20.00 per round per guest out of season, and £25 in season. The 18-hole USGA specification course is set within beautiful wooded parkland and enjoys far reaching views of both Dartmoor and Exmoor.

The course, which covers 5,600 square yards, is perfect for all levels of experience and is extremely popular with both locals and visitors, so it is worth booking your tee-time prior to your arrival on the Highbullen Estate. The par 68 course can easily be accomplished in a half day and golf buggies are available if required.

Looking to improve your skills? An indoor smart golf simulator is a new addition to the facilities at Highbullen and is a great way to practice your swing. The simulator offers 30 of the world’s best courses for you to train on.


There are seven brand new outdoor tennis courts on the Highbullen Estate, which holiday let guests can enjoy free of charge. The all-weather courts include four full size and three half size. Any beginners or players looking to improve their game can book a lesson with a trained coach.


A 20m indoor heated swimming pool is a wonderful facility for all ages. The swimming pool, which is located only a short walk from the cottages, has stunning panoramic views of the local countryside, making it a great place to relax or exercise. Lessons and classes are available throughout the week.

When the weather warms up Highbullen opens its outdoor swimming pool, situated just to the side of the main hotel. This quaint swimming pool is a nice size and is surrounded by sun loungers for topping up your tan.


Looking to get in a workout whilst enjoying your holiday on the Highbullen Estate – then why not visit our state-of-the-art gym? The fully equipped gym offers a full range of cardiovascular machines, including treadmills, rowing machines, cross trainers and bikes. There is also a series of resistance equipment, free weights, a boxing bag with gloves and a spacious exercise area with gym balls, medicine balls and stretching mats. The only kinesis machine in North Devon is also located within the Highbullen gym. A personal trainer and gym introductions are provided onsite, as well as a series of classes to suit all tastes.

Other Leisure Facilities

There are several excellent facilities at Highbullen where guests can sit back, relax and unwind. The sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi are perfect for those looking to get away from the stresses of work, whilst Lisa Tate offers a full range of spa and beauty treatments that can be booked in advance.

Within the grounds of Highbullen experience one of the country’s most loved garden games with a spot of croquet on the lawn, or, for something a little different, there is a large outdoor chess set.

If the weather turns a little wet, or for evening entertainment, head to the Highbullen Billiards Room, where there is a full size snooker table, as well as many more games.


The Highbullen Estate is situated on a branch of land between two of Devon’s best rivers for enjoying a spot of fishing. This relaxing pastime can be relished on either the River Mole, where trout and salmon are the main catch, or the River Taw. Highbullen itself has rights to fish on the River Mole, which is only a short drive from the estate. There is around ¾ mile of the river to fish, as well as a few pools.

Fishing is available for £30 per rod per day and is limited to just two rods per day, so please get in touch if you would like to book your time in advance of your stay at Highbullen.



Walk over rolling hills, along meandering rivers or through magical woods. Chittlehamholt is a great place to stay and explore the area by foot. There is a range of walks available around the hotel and estate, including a short half hour stroll around the village, or a lengthy trek across Exmoor taking in England’s highest cliffs, breath-taking views and wonderful wildlife. For dog owners there are six walks available direct from the hotel, for more information please ask at the hotel reception where a folder with local walks can be found to help you prepare with advise on length of the walk and appropriate footwear.


Country Persuits

Locally, some of the best shooting is available, and at Highbullen we are able to cater for parties, teams or individuals. At the nearby Broadmoor Shooting Ground, Richard Chappel, the ex-England international shot, offers pigeon shooting, and can provide guns, cartridges and insurances if required. Gun storage and dog kennels can also be arranged if needed.

Please note the stalking in the local area is part of the Deer Management Programme in North and Mid-Devon and covers more than 10,000 acres.

Country Persuits

Dining at Highbullen

Highbullen has restaurants and bars to suit all. In the Devon View Restaurant fine dining can be enjoyed with a backdrop of stunning countryside views. The food produced in the restaurant uses mainly locally sourced products and is also the perfect place to have a traditional Sunday lunch with friends and family. Curry nights are also offered at Highbullen.

For light lunches and afternoon tea please visit the newly refurbished Laura Ashley Tea Room located in the Pavilion. The tea rooms, which has wonderful views has a great range of food on offer and can be booked in advance for special occasions.

For more informal meals, The Cellars is a great venue. Opposite the Billiards Room, this cosy restaurant is wonderfully comfortable and is ideal for a peaceful drink. A children’s menu is also available at The Cellars.

A series of comfy lounges and bars are also accessible at Highbullen and are great places to relax or enjoy a cup of coffee with the newspaper. For something a little more special, afternoon tea parties can be arranged either on the lawn during warm months, benefiting from the use of the Pagoda, or beside a crackling fire in the winter.

Don’t want to go out for dinner, then why not order in? Pizza and takeaway can be ordered through the hotel reception and delivered directly to your door.
